Councillor calls for nationwide action on airport taxi charge
01.03.08
A senior councillor has called for a national campaign against the controversial new Aberdeen Airport taxi charges. Licensing committee member and deputy SNP leader, councillor Jim Kiddie, said pressure from MSPs would add extra 'clout' to the protest against proposals to introduce a £1 barrier charge at the airport this April.
The charges have already seen Rainbow Taxis resign from its contract at the airport, and cab drivers go on strike earlier this week. Council licensing convener Callum McCaig has written to BAA expressing the committee's anger at plans for airport drivers to pay £1 every time they pick up a fare at the airport.
In a separate move, BAA has announced that the new charges will come in on April 1 not August 1 as originally planned. The company says the charges are necessary to step up security in the wake of the terrorist attack at Glasgow Airport, however, Councillor Kiddie said the airport owners were 'profiteering' from the current terror situation.
