Taxi barrier fee plan scrapped
02.03.08
Aberdeen Airport has abandoned controversial plans to introduce barrier charges for taxi drivers using the airport. BAA had planned a barrier system that would have seen airport taxis pay £1 every time they picked up passengers from the terminal from April 1. It sparked outrage and lightning-strike action by taxi drivers last Monday.
BAA said the charges were necessary to pay for increased security costs since the terrorist attack at Glasgow airport. However, the drivers said the charges would cost them £10,500 a year. Rainbow Taxis even resigned from their role controlling the airport cabs.
The airport and taxi drivers have reached an agreement after talks and the fee will not be introduced. However, although the barrier fee will not be introduced, permit charges for drivers are still set to rise from £34 a week to £60.
