Over 90 jobs at risk as Servisair decides to pull out

Over 90 jobs could be lost at Aberdeen Airport after ground services company Servisair announced that it is to close its base there. Servisair, who carry out baggage handling and ramp operations at the airport, is planning to shut down its operation on December 7. The move will mean the loss of 93 jobs.
The Servisair ground handling operation, Airway, is one of four contractors handling baggage at the airport. They have contracts with airlines including Ryanair, Logan Air and easyJet.
Bosses briefed staff about the decision to close their operation at Aberdeen Airport yesterday. A union representative said that they were told it had become too expensive for the firm to continue the contracts.
Hugh Galloway, regional organiser from the T&G Union, said: 'We have an arrangement with the company that we should be involved in discussions such as this. However, they have done this [told staff] without any discussion with us. We will be holding meetings today to discuss where we can go from here.'
An airport spokesman said: 'I don't anticipate problems for passengers as the services are likely to be contracted out to other providers.'
