People going on holiday face crippling increases in airport parking charges, as some 'double their already sky-high prices', the News of the World reports. Twenty of the country's 23 main UK airports have increased short stay parking prices in the last year, with many also increasing their long stay parking prices, the newspapers investigation revealed.
The cost for 8 days in the short stay car park at Aberdeen Airport to cover a week-long Easter or summer break has increased by 104%, from £63.90 to £130.40. Exeter has upped their prices by 70%, from £68.80 to £117.50, and at Gatwick the cost has soared from £172 to £240, up 40%.
Fifteen of the airports have also increased the cost for long stay car parks, the research shows. Manchester has increased the cost of eight days from £70.50 to £100 - up 42% - while Gatwick has increased by 25%, from £73.60 to £92. Bob Atkinson of travelsupermarket.com told the newspaper: ‘The price rises far outstrip inflation and add to the bill of a family holiday.'
