Drug smuggler jailed

A man caught at Aberdeen Airport trying to smuggle £500,000 worth of cocaine into the UK hidden in his briefcase has been jailed for 40 months. Nigerian Cosmos Okoronkwo, 43, was stopped when he tried to go through the nothing to declare channel on December 2 last year. He had arrived via Amsterdam and claimed he was planning to do business with a local company.
His briefcase was searched and then X-rayed and the drugs were found after officers realised that one of the dividers inside it was thicker than others. Mr Okoronkwo later said ‘a friend of a friend’ had asked him to carry the case in return for £3,000.
He admitted being concerned in the supply of two kilos of cocaine at the High Court in Edinburgh. Defence counsel Jonathan Crowe said that he did not fully appreciate the impact of illegal drugs in the UK. Judge Lord Brodie said the drugs trade was a ‘great evil’ affecting the community, and jailed him for 40 months.
