MSP wants speedie runway extension
06.10.09
An MSP has urged BAA to invest some of the money it will generate from the sale of either Edinburgh or Glasgow airports into bringing forward plans to extend the runway at Aberdeen Airport, the Press & Journal reports. Aberdeen MSP Brian Adam raised the issue with BAA's chief executive, Colin Matthews, saying Aberdeen has been used as a ‘cash cow’ for too long and must benefit from the money a sale will yield.
Mr Adam told the newspaper that spending £10m to lengthen the runway by 328 yards would allow larger and more fuel-efficient aircraft to operate from the airport, and open up the opportunity for new routes to the north-east. BAA was recently awarded planning permission for the extension, and Mr Adam wants early implementation of the plan to give a boost to local jobs and business during the recession.
