Giant RAF plane plays flying visit
08.06.08
One of the RAF’s biggest planes made its first ever visit to Aberdeen Airport late last week, the Evening Express reports. The 50-metre-long C-17 Globemaster III landed at the airport in order to bring a soldier home from Afghanistan.
The soldier was rushed back so that he could be with his seriously ill father. The high-priority case meant spotters caught a rare glimpse of the vast transport aircraft in Aberdeen airspace. One enthusiast captured the one-off sight of the C-17 taking off at Dyce on camera, and has posted it on a video-sharing website.
The plane is one of only 5 Globemasters in an RAF fleet. It can transport 45,360kgs of freight - 3 armoured vehicles or 13 Land Rovers - while flying at more than 30,000 feet. It can also carry a 30-ft-long Chinook helicopter.
