Flybe plans major expansion
09.09.08
Regional budget airline Flybe it is planning to further expand its services from Aberdeen Airport - with routes including Paris and Dusseldorf on the horizon. The airline took over the service between Aberdeen and Gatwick earlier this year - and said it is going from strength to strength.
Flybe's chief commercial officer, Mike Rutter, said the airport features heavily in its future plans. The 'major expansion' at Aberdeen Airport could lead to 100 new jobs and several new routes, he added.
Mr Rutter said the airline planned to invest £160m in the region following lengthy talks with Aberdeen Airport owner BAA. Plans to add 4 or 5 planes to the single aircraft currently based at the terminal are expected to create a substantial number of jobs. The move could see 1 million passengers a year travelling to and from Aberdeen on Flybe flights, he said.
The airline currently flies from Aberdeen to Belfast City, Birmingham, Exeter, Jersey, Leeds Bradford, Gatwick, Newcastle and Southampton. Mr Rutter said Flybe was also planning expansion of its operations from Inverness.
