Scotland's Airports enjoy passenger January boost

Scotland's 3 busiest airports got off to a flying start to 2006, according to figures released by airports operator BAA yesterday. Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen airport handled almost 1.3 million passengers between them in January.
An increase in international traffic, up 14.6%, saw overall passenger numbers in January jump by 5.8% on the previous year at BAA's 3 Scottish hubs. At Aberdeen Airport, growth was even stronger with international passenger numbers up by almost 30% on the same period last year.
Across the 3 airports, domestic traffic was relatively static, with passenger numbers only marginally higher than last year, partly a reaction to the growth of direct international travel from Scotland.
Edinburgh was Scotland's busiest airport in January with 552,708 passengers, a rise of 3.6% on the previous year. International passenger numbers were also up by 14.5%. Passenger numbers at Glasgow Airport grew by 4.3% in January to 525,653. Again international traffic grew substantially at the airport, up 11.2% on the previous year.
Despite success in Scotland, BAA figures showed a sharp decline in trans-Atlantic travel from its airports across the UK. The operator blamed the 3.4% year-on-year fall in numbers travelling to the United States on higher fuel costs for operators and a softening economy which has seen fewer business people make the trip.
