Fan malfunction caused Aberdeen Airport flight emergency

A mid-air emergency on a BA flight from Aberdeen airport has been blamed on a faulty cooling fan. During the emergency the plane's crew had to put on oxygen masks and the jet returned to Aberdeen last October.
The British Airways Airbus carrying 132 passengers and 6 crew had just left Aberdeen Airport bound for Heathrow when the incident happened. An Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) report has blamed the incident on a worn bearing in a cooling fan.
The AAIB report described how the crew wore oxygen masks after the heat in the aircraft increased, accompanied by 'a strange smell'. The report stated: 'Initially it was thought that the smell emanated from the galley ovens, but, as it was early in the flight, these had not yet been switched on. The flight crew donned their oxygen masks, declared an emergency and then carried out an uneventful return to Aberdeen.'
Investigations resulted in suspicion that the source of the problem was the avionics cooling system. When the avionics fan vent was sent for repair it was discovered that it had worn bearings which were believed to have been the cause of the incident.
