Another blow for Aberdeen as bmi scraps Amsterdam flights

Aberdeen Airport suffered another blow yesterday, when full service airline bmi confirmed it is stopping its flights to Amsterdam. The airline has already dropped its Brussels flights from the airport, with four other airlines scrapping routes in the last six weeks.
bmi currently operates 11 flights a week from Aberdeen to the Dutch capital, however flights can only be booked until August 31, after which the service will be withdrawn. However, a spokesman for Aberdeen Airport said Amsterdam was its 'most popular international destination' and stressed passengers could continue travelling to the Dutch capital by flying direct from Aberdeen with KLM.
A spokesman for bmi said: 'This in no way diminishes our overall support for Aberdeen. Overall our performance at the airport continues to be double-digit growth and we continue to look at opportunities to develop new routes.' He added that the airline plans to increase its service from Aberdeen to Manchester to seven return flights a day at the start of September.
The move to scrap the Amsterdam flights is another blow for Aberdeen Airport, which has seen six services axed in just over a month. Edinburgh-based FlyGlobespan recently announced it will be withdrawing its flights to Geneva and Monarch is scrapping its Malaga flights.
In addition Ryanair recently announced it will stop its Liverpool flights. Fledgling carrier Jetstream Express scrapped its Aberdeen - Blackpool service and, as mentioned above, bmi is scrapping its Brussels flights.
