BAA still confident on airport expansion

BAA are confident that the proposed runway extension at Aberdeen Airport will go ahead, despite falling passenger numbers and the deepening recession, the Press & Journal reports. It is investing £10 million in an initial runway extension of 328 yards and an expanded international arrivals hall. The first phase of the redevelopment programme, which is currently under way, involves a bigger customs and immigration hall, improved baggage reclaim facilities, and work on the airport car park.
Over the next decade, BAA intends to spend £60 million on extending the runway further to allow bigger, more modern aircraft to fly from Aberdeen to destinations throughout the Mediterranean, North Africa and North America, as well as building a bigger, better-equipped terminal and new aircraft parking stands. However, the plans were developed before the recession, when BAA was predicting passenger numbers at Aberdeen would rise to 5.9 million by 2030.
