Airport war memorial unveiled
12.11.09
A World War II bomber pilot and glider pioneer returned to Aberdeen Airport yesterday to commemorate the hub’s wartime history and honour those who never came back. Philip Dawson joined Lord Provost Peter Stephen for the unveiling of a war memorial at the airport, which was taken over by the RAF at the outbreak of war in 1939 and became home to 612 Reconnaissance Squadron.
The unveiling of the memorial was also attended by members of the local RAF Association, families of ex-servicemen who had been at the base and local holders of some of the military’s top honours.
