Plane Stupid protesters in court
15.06.10
Nine environmental campaigners who forced Aberdeen Airport to close during an early morning protest in March last year have gone on trial. The Plane Stupid members face charges including breach of the peace and vandalism. Around 40 protesters gathered outside Aberdeen Sheriff Court before the start of the trial.
The campaigners cut through a security fence at the airport and locked themselves to fencing they erected on an aircraft taxiing area, preventing take-offs or landings. Some of the nine - eight from Scotland and one from England - also climbed on to the roof of the terminal building where they played mini-golf (a reference to plans to build a golf resort nearby) and displayed a banner calling for action on climate change.
All nine defendants deny the charges. The trial is expected to last several days.
