Runway extension decision deferred
17.11.06
Controversial plans for a £10 million, 984ft extension to Aberdeen Airport's runway have been referred to a full meeting of Aberdeen City Council for a final decision. At a meeting of the planning committee a motion was passed for deferral to a meeting on 13 December, after three members of the committee called for more discussion on the issue.
Airport Management believe the 300m extension would open up new business and tourist opportunities including the creation of hundreds of new jobs. Head of planning at Aberdeen City Council, Dr Margaret Boche, had said in a report that the extension is needed for a 'dynamic local economy'. She added that objections on the grounds of the impact on climate change could not be used to refuse a planning application.
Local residents and the Scottish Green Party have raised concerns about noise and pollution.
