Council wants to open up airport taxi rank
18.09.09
Queues for taxis at Aberdeen Airport could be a thing of the past under new plans put forward by Council officials, the Press & Journal reports. Currently only ComCabs’ drivers can pick up at the airport under an exclusive deal with operator BAA, but a new plan recommends that any licenced Aberdeen driver should be able to operate from the hub.
The changes could see a reduction in the time passengers have to wait for taxis at the airport – a longstanding problem. Full details of the plans have not been published, but the newspaper reports the move follows meetings of the Taxi Working Group, whose members include airport and Aberdeen City Council officials as well as taxi operators.
Whether BAA would back the proposals was not raised by the newspaper. As they own the airport and could block any vehicle from its roads, they would appear to have the last say on any changes. We would suspect that BAA could introduce a pick up charge on all drivers, which would maintain revenue and help cut queues, assuming its contract with ComCabs allows this.
