£60m expansion plans announced

Plans for a £60 million development scheme to transform Aberdeen airport into a global gateway for the north-east of Scotland were unveiled yesterday.
The plans were published less than a week after Aberdeen City Council approved a 300 metre extension to the airport's main runway, increasing the range of direct international destinations. The extension will allow airlines to fly non-stop to destinations across the Mediterranean, north Africa and North America, and allow the airport to accommodate the new generation of cleaner, quieter aircraft, such as the Boeing 787 and the Boeing 747 jumbo jet.
The first £10 million phase of the plan will involve extending the runway plus an extension and refurbishment of the international arrivals hall, a larger customs and immigration hall and improved baggage-reclaim facilities over two years.
Aberdeen Airport is already the fastest-growing of the BAA's seven UK airports, with passenger numbers this year passing the 3 million mark for the first time. And a master plan for the future of the airport predicts that it could be handling 4 million passengers a year by 2015, and as many as 5.9 million by 2030.
