Airport announce upgrade schedule - and more airport parking

Aberdeen Airport has revealed details of plans for major expansion and upgrade of its facilities. The plans include an extended runway allowing planes to takeoff for new routes to North Africa and, eventually, the US, a modernised and expanded entrance to the terminal with an all-glass frontage and several doors, plus another layer of airport parking above the present area.
The plans come soon after the opening of a revamped departure area - which doubled its size. Airport managing director Kevin Brown said: 'We are BAA's fast-growing UK airport, expecting to handle a record-breaking 3.4 million travellers this year. Ensuring we have the right facilities and capacity to meet the demand of our expanding operation is vital.'
The next new development will be the opening in a few weeks of the £720,000 new Gate 9 lounge to the north of the main building. It will have more than 100 seats for departing passengers and includes a 'window seat' for a panoramic view of aircraft.
Work will also begin towards the end of the year on the first stages of upgrading the airport entrance. The check-in area will be extended to where the information desk now stands and beyond. Ticket desks will also be re-sited on the same side.
The next phase involves constructing a new glass frontage to the terminal, with several doors and an overarching roof. Alongside this work, the airport will build another tier onto the car park that will make space for another 300 vehicles.
Then next year work will start on another major development - the long-awaited runway extension. City councillors have approved an extra 300 metres, but initially 125 metres will be constructed.
Mr. Brown said: 'With the existing runway due to be resurfaced, we will be combining the extension and maintenance work to avoid disruption to flights - much of it happening at night. This is an exciting time as we look towards the future and give the airport a whole new look.'
