Drug smuggler had over £1.1 worth of cocaine

A 65-year-old Nigerian man was caught trying to bring cocaine worth £1.1m into Scotland via Aberdeen Airport, a court heard this week. He now faces a substantial jail sentence.
John Onwuchekwa was stopped as he attempted to go through the green channel at Aberdeen Airport in June. The High Court in Glasgow heard that customs officers were suspicious because the suit carrier smelled of a substance which is often used by smugglers to conceal the smell of cocaine, understood to be coffee.
The Nigerian had arrived from Togo in Africa, via Paris, on June 24. Almost 2 kg of very pure cocaine was found in his suit carrier. He admitted being concerned in supplying drugs and said that he was being paid £3,000 for his part in the operation.
Sentencing was deferred until next month for background reports. Lord Hodge told a weeping Mr. Onwuchekwa: 'You pleaded guilty to a very serious offence - trying to import a substantial quantity of drugs into this country. It is almost inevitable that you will face a substantial custodial sentence.'
