Aberdeen Airport in talks over new routes

More than a dozen new destinations are being discussed with airlines by management Aberdeen Airport. The news comes after the airport lost a number of routes recently. The new routes under discussion include the airport's first regular flights to Greece, holiday favourite Lanzarote, fashion capital Milan, and destinations in Eastern Europe. It is also discussing a possible service to Stansted, an addition to its existing links Heathrow and Luton.
Targeted destinations for the airport include Corfu, Athens or Crete, Munich or Frankfurt, Warsaw, and other cities in Eastern Europe. Grenoble in France and Milan could also be on the cards, along with Geneva in Switzerland - a service which airline flyglobespan promised but failed to deliver earlier this year. For the UK, in addition to Stansted, there is also the hope of a link to Cardiff.
The list of destinations was drawn up after consultations with airlines in the hope a business case can be made for introducing the services. Airport managing director Kevin Brown said that the destinations were picked for their commercial potential. He said: 'This follows consultations and research with passengers, business customers and with airlines,' adding that all of the destinations were 'realistic options' for the next year.
The news of the planned raft of new routes comes after Scottish budget airline flyglobespan axed winter services to Alicante, Cyprus, Faro, Madeira, Palma and Prague, plus a summer service to Jersey, blaming high airport charges, a charge BAA rejected.
Mr Brown said BAA was doing everything possible to win new routes and so widen the choice of international and domestic destinations. He added: 'We will not get all of these routes, but we always aim to bring the very best options to the region and to the travelling public.'
