Jail for drug smuggler with over £1.1m worth of cocaine

A 65-year-old African man who attempted to smuggle £1.1 million worth of cocaine into Scotland via Aberdeen Airport has been sentenced to 4 years and 8 months in jail.
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) officers detained John Kanu Onwuchekwa, from Benin, in June when he arrived at Aberdeen Airport on a flight from Togo via Paris. He had 4 kilos of cocaine with a street value of £1.1 million concealed in his baggage. Customs officers were suspicious because the suit carrier he was carrying smelled of a substance which is often used by smugglers to conceal the smell of cocaine, understood to be coffee.
Mr. Onwuchekwa pleaded guilty last month at the High Court in Glasgow and said that he was being paid £3,000 for his part in the operation. He was sentenced to five years in jail, less time already served. The judge recommended that he is deported at the end of his jail term.
