Airport taxi drivers may strike
26.02.08
Aberdeen Airport taxi drivers are to hold talks before considering strike action over new charges to be introduced at the hub.
The move comes after Rainbow Taxis announced they would end their contract to serve the airport after being told their drivers were to be charged £1 per hire for entering the airport. City-based taxi drivers who pick passengers up at the airport as busy times will be subject to a charge of £2.
BAA says that the charges are necessary to pay for the step up in security in the wake of the terrorist attack at Glasgow Airport last year. The other taxi firm operating at Aberdeen Airport, Com-Cabs, is in discussion with the airport over the new charge, which will be introduced on August 1.
Rainbow Taxis wanted Aberdeen City Council to add the charge to the metered fare. It has been reported that drivers from the firm plan to strike over the charges. Larry Fettes, a member of the driver's committee, said: ‘We are meeting with Com Cabs on Monday or Tuesday.’
