Climate9 fined over airport protest

Nine climate activists who occupied the tarmac at Aberdeen Airport have been fined between £300 and £700 each after being convicted of breach of the peace. The nine members of direct action group Plane Stupid, some dressed up as the tycoon Donald Trump, were arrested in March last year after chaining themselves to a makeshift cage on the tarmac or clambering on to the terminal roof for a game of mini golf.
The 'Climate9' targeted Aberdeen Airport because of its close links to the North Sea oil industry and its location near Trump's planned exclusive £750m golf resort, which is being built on environmentally protected dunes north of the city. Aberdeen sheriff court was told the protests caused at least £133,000 in losses for airlines and BAA and around 500 passengers were affected by flight delays and cancellations.
The protesters are considering an appeal against their conviction and sentence. They said that their protests were necessary because of the significant damage aviation is causing the environment, and that their protests are supported by climate scientists, lawyers and the Church of Scotland.
